Water Softeners Overview

Water Softeners are used to treat hard water. Water Softeners work by replacing the calcium and magnesium in the water with sodium. Water Softeners may also remove a small amount of iron or manganese, but for high levels, it is not recommended.

Water Softeners will generally require a professional installation, and Water Softeners are relatively expensive to both purchase and maintain.

For hard water treatment you may wish to use a magnetic water conditioner as they are signficantly less expensive alternative to water softeners. Although some people claim they don't work, there is a great deal of anecdotal evidence, and some scientific research, to suggest they are equally as effective as water softeners in hard water treatment.

A water softener removes harmful minerals such as calcium, magnesium, lime, and iron from water supplies. By removing these minerals, water softeners eliminate scaling -- or mineral deposits -- in pipes, fixtures, and water heaters. RVs, mobile homes, boats, and campers are particularly susceptible to damage from hard water because they are often used at locations such as campgrounds, mobile parks, and marinas that supply mineral-rich water from wells or similar sources. Outdoor spigots often used to fill up water tanks in RVs or to wash cars and boats also supply hard water. Hard water from these sources significantly reduces the life of water heaters and plumbing.

Simple Regeneration

A water softener removes damaging minerals from water by replacing the ions of those minerals with the ions of other minerals, such as salt (the amount of salt ions that remain is so small that people cannot taste the difference between softened and unsoftened water).

The "Quattro-S" system includes softeners that are activated by hardness sensors to remove hard salts; pretreatment microfilters (5-[micro]m pleated or carbon block); reverse osmosis technology to reduce conductivity and bacteria; and a continuous electro deionization system to ensure regeneration is continuous and free of chemicals.

Water purification is the removal of contaminants from raw water to produce drinking water that is pure enough for human consumption. Substances that are removed during the process of drinking water treatment include bacteria, algae, viruses, fungi, minerals, and man-made chemical pollutants. Many contaminants can be dangerous—but depending on the quality standards, others are removed during the water purification to improve the water's smell, taste, and appearance. A small amount of disinfectant is usually intentionally left in the water to reduce the risk of re-contamination in the distribution system.

It is not possible to tell whether water is safe to drink just by looking at it. Simple procedures such as boiling or the use of a household charcoal purification are not sufficient for water treatment from an unknown source. Even natural spring water—considered safe for all practical purposes in the 1800s—must now be tested before determining what kind of water treatment is needed.
